OSOS RIVAS 6 – 35 BERGAMO LIONS
The Bergamo Lions, Eurobowl champions for two consecutive years, traveled to Madrid to play against the reigning Spanish champions, the Madrid Osos on Saturday March 23rd. The game promised to be a hard-hitting clash between two very talented teams. The Spanish team was clearly outmatched by the visiting Italian team’s size and strength. The Lions roster boasts a well-rounded offense and defense comprised of talented players with NFL Europe and Canadian league experience. From the very beginning, the Lions set the tone for the rest of the encounter by returning the opening kickoff for a 90+ yard score. The Madrid Osos’ offense was unable to engineer a scoring drive during the first half, and their defense gave up some big plays (and yards) to the Bergamo Lions which they turned into scores for a 35-0 score at halftime.
The Osos went to work in the second half, determined to make the score more respectable. Again the offense sputtered and was unable to score during the 3rd quarter. The defense showed its tenacity stopping the Lion’s advances and making them punt on fourth downs. The Osos’ defense never-say-die spirit was inspiring as they force a turnover near the end of the fourth quarter, bringing out the Osos’ offense final appearance of the game. The Osos averted a shutout by marching the ball downfield and scoring with less than two minutes to go in the game, but were unable to convert the extra point. Final score: Bergamo Lions 35 – Madrid Osos 6.
Both teams left the field that night full of sweat, tears and blood and showed a tremendous amount of heart. The Osos team may not have won the game, but they won the respect of their fans and the Bergamo Lions’ players and coaches. In April, when these two teams meet again, both teams will know what to expect and will be ready to play a great game of American football.
The grandstands were filled with approximately 600 excited fans. Madrid fans, although disheartened by the loss, were treated to a fine sunny afternoon of premium American Football.
