Sölleröd beats Wolverines

The Gold Diggers defeated the Helsinki Wolverines on Saturday, despite trailing 21-10 at half time. This boosted the visitors’ hopes of reaching the next round, having lost to the Helsinki Roosters last week.

It took both teams some time to get into gear, with offenses trading punts and interceptions in the first quarter. The Wolverines were the first to find the endzone in the second quarter with a 58 yard run from QB Cedric Johnson. This was swiftly followed by a 1 yard run from Stephen Stokes to extend the lead to 14-0.

A field goal from P Fromberg opened up the visitors’ account before Johnson hit rookie receiver Sebastian Sagne from 76 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-3. Then just before halftime, the Gold Diggers found the endzone courtesy of a fake field goal. Fromberg ran the ball into the endzone from 5 yards out.

The second half belonged very much to the Gold Diggers. Two touchdown passes from Zach Shaw put the Danes in front by a score of 21-23. A one yard run from Johnson briefly put the hosts back in front but the Gold Diggers proved tenacious with A Simondsen scoring twice on the ground. The visitors finally sealed the game with a field goal from Fromberg.

The Wolverines will now face the Roosters in the final pool game at ISS Stadium on Saturday 4th May.
